About the puzzle How does this work?

The tray has 43 usable spaces. The nine pieces cover 41, so a completed layout leaves exactly two spaces visible: one month and one day.

The solver tests every rotation and flipped orientation, then uses an exact-cover search to find non-overlapping placements.
